Dear Jerry,
February was the last month to be added to
the calendar, since the Romans originally
considered winter a monthless period. February
was named for the Roman god Februus, the god of
purification
Trends
The first decade of the new millennium is half
over, and some of the shine and polish has worn
off. The same goes for fashion colors, you can
finally put away that shiny neon-metallic stuff,
we are now into retro styles and pastel colors.
The Dominate colors for 2005 will be Aqua Blues
and Grassy Greens. Every Fashion Designer and
Forecaster agrees on this. A very large color
influence is last year's Stepford Wives (2004),
for some reason the pastels, and fashion
accessories from that movie are showing up
everywhere. Be sure to keep an eye out for the
Palm Beach Pastels (bright green, icy blue,
yellow, lavender and pink)
There seems to be an inverse relationship
between what is going on in current events and
which direction our fashions move in. I guess
with the current state of the world it is no
surprise that designers and consumers are
looking less towards the future and focusing
more on the past.
This year no one-decade is hot. Designers are
looking at the Roaring 20's, the 1950's, the
Hippie fashions of the 60's and 70's and believe
it or not revising some of the 1980's Material
Girl looks.

Fragments: the breakdown of perfection.
Expect to see a little bit of Grunge fashion
return; I'm not talking about Nirvana. Look for
traditional items worn in non-traditional ways.
Take the brooch for example, you are starting to
see your Grandma's brooch worn in clusters, or
in the hair, it may be pined to a sleeve or even
at the hemline.
This type of unorthodox fashion statement breaks
that head-to-toe vogue look. It is a little bit
grunge, and material girl. And it is very much a
personal fashion statement.

Beading Scam |
 |
|
Unique Gems, has fleeced tens of millions of
dollars from South Floridians, it was a
work-at-home Ponzi scheme that used the famed
astrologer Walter
Mercado as a pitchman. It promised big rewards
to those willing to plunk down thousands for
kits to assemble beaded necklaces.
Founded in 1995, Unique Gems promoted its
get-rich-quick schemes at lavish parties and
milked a photo of company officials with
President Clinton -- a picture taken after the
firm had made an $85,000 campaign contribution
that was later returned.
Some of those investors later said they had
taken out second mortgages on their homes, run
up huge credit-card bills and borrowed from
friends and family to purchase the kits. It was
shut down in 1997 by state authorities
who dubbed it a classic Ponzi scheme in which
earlier investors were paid off by later ones.

How One Woman almost single-handedly started the
Valentine's Day Card Business
It is astounding that this one woman could have
had such a long-lasting impact upon the millions
of Valentines sent yearly in this nation. This
is the story of one imaginative, whose flair,
thoughts, devotion, and determination created
the modern Valentines day card industry, and
whom the Greeting Card Association has honored
with the creation of the annual Esther Howland
Award.
