Dear Jerry,
In ancient days, observers used to follow Sirius, the
brightest star in the nighttime sky and part of the
constellation known as "The Big Dog". It was known
as "the dog star."
On July 23, the star rises and sets with the sun, and
the ancients believed the star was so bright, it gave off
heat and added to the sun's warmth to make the days
even hotter. The term "Dog Days of Summer" came to
mean the 20 days before and after this alignment --
July 3 to Aug. 11.
The summer is winding down. Here in central Florida
school starts in the next couple of weeks, and
everybody is trying to make time for last minute get a
ways. I hope that you have had a pleasant summer.
We are giving away silver.
This August we are giving a 100 gram bag of Bali Silver
to Eight Lucky Winners
Through out the year many vendors send me samples
of the handmade silver beads. Most of these samples
are spacers. I have put together a sample of the best
of the spacers and have decided to give them away.
During the month of August I will have two drawings a
week, each winner will receive 1 - 100 gram bag of
silver Bali-Spacer beads. My wife (Lisa)
counted out one of the bags and there were over 600
pieces of silver in it.
The dates of the drawings will be August 8th, August
15th, August 22rd and August 29th.

Selling to Nordstrom's |
 |
|
Last month I passed on some information given to me
about selling to department stores, especially
Nordstrom.
Then I recieved this e-mail
A couple of weeks ago I received an email from you
forwarded from one of your customers stating that
Nordstrom's has local jewelry buyers. Do you know if
that is just some of the stores or all? Because I went
to our store here in Connecticut and they do not do
local buying.
Hope to hear from you soon. Susan
Did anybody else try to sell to any department stores? I
would love to pass on you experiences.

Becoming A Sundance Vendor |
 |
|
I love the Sundance Catalogs. My wife ordered me one
thing from them almost ten years ago, and they still
send me catalogs. I was trying to figure out how you
become a vendor for Sundance, what is required etc. I
have sent them several emails but they have never
answered.
Has anybody out there ever sold to them? This is from
their FAQ page.
For consideration of inclusion in future catalogs, please
send photos and pricing information to:
Sundance Catalog Attn: Product Submssion:
3865 West 2400 South
Salt Lake City, Utah 84120
or email to:
samplesubmission@sundance.net
If you would like photos returned, please enclose a self-
addressed stamped envelope. If this is not included and
the product is not selected these materials will be
discarded. Due to the high volume of submissions we
receive, phone requests for the status of our decision
on a particular product cannot be responded to.
If the product is selected for consideration, we will
contact you for more information and a possible sample
shipment. Unsolicited samples will not be returned.

The Specials for August |
 |
|
The Birthstone colors for August is Peridot.
Peridot is perhaps derived from the French word peritot
which means unclear, probably due to the inclusions
and cloudy nature of large stones. It could also be
named from the Arabic word faridat which means gem.
In either case, peridot has been mined as a gemstone
for an estimated four thousand years or better, and is
mentioned in the Bible under the Hebrew name of
pitdah. Peridot gems along with other gems were
probably used in the fabled Breastplates of the Jewish
High Priest, artifacts that have never been found. The
Greeks and Romans refered to peridot as topazion and
topazius respectively and this name was later given to
topaz, to end the confusion with the two gems.
Historical legend has it that peridot was the favorite
gemstone of Cleopatra. Pliny wrote about the green
stone form Zagbargad Island in 1500 B.C.. Even until
recently have jewelers used the term "chrysolite" (latin
for golden stone) in refering to peridot gems for some
reason. This term has also been used to refer to other
gemstones, of a more golden color.
All products that have Peridot in the name are
5% off for this month.

Heard this from a customer |
 |
|
I was in a retail store the other day and saw something
labeled blue cherry quartz.
When I asked about it, the salesperson said that it was
just like the cherry quartz but a blue version. Now I
had already been informed by another wholesaler that
cherry, strawberry, watermelon, quartz is glass. As
you stated on your website, initially this product was
sold as quartz. Originally, I was told it was from Siberia
or Russia. NOW we all know it is glass, if we pay
attention.
What all of this means to say is that you are upfront.
Glass is glass, from what you said, the process is more
involved, and the cost should be a little more than
expected. Unfortunately, I think I greatly overpaid that
retailer for imitation blue and green quartzite beads and
I will know when the ones I ordered from you arrive (I'm
keeping them). These beads and the other I mentioned
above were displayed with blue quartzite and resemble
that natural stone. However, the cost was 10.00 -
15.00 more a strand among the display. Some of the
bright ocean blue glass from China is very similar to the
high end stands of blue quartzite.
