Bead by Degrees

You are walking along the beach and you find a perfect sea shell. It has a nice clean hole through and it would make a perfect bead. Did you find a sea shell or did you find a bead? If you take it home and string it then it is a bead, if you put it in a jar then it is a sea shell. We have to do some action to turn it into a bead. The shell by itself is performing the task that nature has laid out for it, we make it into something else. The same goes for a piece of clay that we roll into a ball, or a bottle cap that we poke a hole in.

The common definition of bead is "anything with a hole that can be strung". This definition, however true it may be, does little to account for the human origin of beads and the spirit in which beads are made and used. Humans create beads for human purposes.
  • If humans did not create the object and nobody strings it is it still a bead?
  • If a man says something in the woods and his wife ain't around to hear it, is he still wrong?

I created these pages to help sort out and define the beadiness of an object, you can take it as a light or a serious as you want. I could not decide if I wanted to use the term Order of Beadiness or Degree of Beadiness. So I sort of slip back and fourth between them.

Heck I'm not even sure if I'm spelling beadiness right my spell checker does not seem to like these complex terms.

Is it a Pendant or Bead?
The difference between pendants and beads should be clear. Beads have holes that go through their bodies. Pendants have bails attached to their bodies. The notion of pendant-shaped beads is as odd as the notion of bead-shaped pendants. Neither pendant nor bead is a shape.
